Privacy Policy

Last updated: 19 July 2026

The short version. Vinia has no user accounts and asks for no email address or password in the app. To recommend a wine, the app sends the menu photo you scan, your profile and taste preferences, and details you provide about your meal to our service and third-party AI providers. Server records are grouped using a random, pseudonymous installation identifier created on your device. We don't show ads, track you across other companies' apps or websites, or sell your data.

Who we are

Vinia - AI Wine Assistant (the "app" or "Vinia") is a wine-recommendation app for iPhone. This Privacy Policy explains how the app and the Vinia website process information, why we process it, who receives it, how long it is kept, and the choices you have. In this policy, "we", "us", and "our" refer to the operator and data controller, Niklas Weller, based in St. Gallen, Switzerland. If you have any questions, contact us at hello@viniawine.com.

Information we collect

Information you provide

  • Your first name, which the app asks you to enter during onboarding so it can personalize the experience.
  • Profile and onboarding preferences: your selected age range, how often you dine out, how familiar you are with wine, your taste or mood preference, your learning preference, and your selected app language. The preference answers are general categories rather than exact values.
  • Recommendation context: what you are eating, optional free-form table notes, and your answers to the taste questions asked during a recommendation session.
  • Photos of wine menus that you capture with the camera or select from your photo library, including any on-photo marks you draw. Images are resized and re-encoded on your device before upload, which removes embedded metadata such as location.
  • Your wine journal: the wines you save, Vinia's recommendation reasoning, your ratings, and any journal notes you write.
  • Support communications: if you email us, we receive your email address and the contents of your message so we can respond to your request.

Information collected automatically

  • A pseudonymous installation identifier — a random identifier generated the first time you open the app and stored on your device. It lets us group scans, enforce usage limits, and associate journal events with one installation. It is not an advertising identifier, but it is still treated as personal data where applicable.
  • Technical and diagnostic data processed by our providers when the app or website communicates with them, such as IP address, IP-derived country, request time, app or browser information, response status, request duration, token usage, and error information.

Subscriptions and purchases

Vinia offers an auto-renewing subscription. Purchases are processed by Apple and managed with RevenueCat, our subscription provider. We receive your subscription status (for example, whether your subscription is active or in a trial), purchase history, and a RevenueCat-generated pseudonymous identifier. We do not receive or store your payment card details — those are handled by Apple under Apple's own terms.

What we do not collect

  • No account, login, or password. We receive your email address only if you choose to contact us.
  • No GPS, precise location, or background location. Network providers may infer a coarse location from your IP address as described above.
  • No contacts, no microphone, no health data.
  • No advertising identifiers, and no tracking across other companies' apps or websites.
  • No third-party advertising.

How we use your information

  • To read the menu you scan and generate a wine recommendation tailored to your taste and your meal.
  • To personalize the app (for example, addressing you by name and adapting questions to your stated experience level).
  • To keep your wine journal and show your past picks.
  • To enforce fair-usage limits using the installation identifier.
  • To operate, maintain, debug, secure, and improve the service.
  • To manage your subscription and entitlements.
  • To respond to support and privacy requests and comply with legal obligations.

Legal bases for processing

Where the EU/EEA or UK GDPR applies, we process data as necessary to provide the app and subscriptions you request and perform our contract with you; based on our legitimate interests in operating, securing, troubleshooting, and improving Vinia; to comply with legal obligations; and, where required, with your consent. You can withdraw consent at any time, but this does not affect processing that occurred before withdrawal. Swiss data-protection law applies independently where relevant.

How your information is shared

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the service providers and platforms that make the app and website work:

  • Supabase — our database and backend hosting provider. It processes app requests and technical logs. Extracted menu-scan data and append-only journal events are stored in Supabase and associated with your pseudonymous installation identifier.
  • OpenRouter and AI model providers — to read your menu photo and produce a recommendation, the app sends the image, profile and taste context, meal details, table notes, and session answers to AI providers through OpenRouter, which may route requests to providers such as Anthropic. Provider retention and model-training practices vary by the selected endpoint and our OpenRouter privacy configuration. We do not use this information to build advertising profiles. See OpenRouter's Privacy Policy.
  • Apple — for app distribution and in-app purchases.
  • RevenueCat — for subscription management, as described above.
  • Vercel and Google Fonts — Vercel hosts this website and processes standard request logs. The website loads its typeface from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to Google and sends standard network information such as your IP address and browser headers.

We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users or the service.

AI processing

Vinia relies on third-party artificial-intelligence models to interpret your menu photos and recommend a wine. When you scan a menu or request the next recommendation step, the relevant photo, profile, meal and taste context, table notes, and session answers are transmitted to these providers for processing. Wine-journal notes are stored in Supabase but are not sent to the AI recommendation providers. Please avoid including sensitive personal information or images of people in menu photos and table notes. OpenRouter and the selected model provider may process or retain inputs and outputs according to their applicable settings and policies.

Data retention

Your saved profile and wine journal are stored on your device. A journal entry remains there until you delete that entry in the app or remove the app. Deleting a journal entry in the app deletes only the local copy shown on that device. It does not delete journal-event records that were previously sent to Supabase. Those server records form an append-only operational archive of the wine, rating, and note data submitted when the entry was created or edited.

Extracted menu-scan records and journal events currently have no fixed automatic expiry and are retained while reasonably needed to operate, secure, and improve the service, unless they are deleted following a verified request or must be kept for a legal reason. Vinia does not intentionally save the original menu-photo files in its application database after processing, although infrastructure and AI providers may temporarily retain request data under their own retention settings and policies. Technical logs, backups, subscription records, and support emails are retained under the relevant provider schedules or as long as reasonably necessary for their purpose.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Access to our database is restricted: the app can only append journal events and cannot read, update, or delete server records, and the scan records are accessible only to our server-side systems. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live (for example, under the EU/EEA GDPR, the Swiss FADP, or the California CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict the processing of your personal data, and to object to certain processing.

  • Individual journal entries: open an entry and choose "Delete from journal" to remove it from the journal on that device. This action does not delete the corresponding Supabase archive.
  • Other on-device data: removing the app deletes its locally stored profile, journal, and installation identifier from that device.
  • Server-side data: email hello@viniawine.com to request access, correction, or deletion of records associated with your installation. Before uninstalling, you can copy the identifier from Me → Housekeeping → Device ID and include it in your request. In-app journal deletion alone does not initiate a server-deletion request.
  • Subscriptions: manage or cancel anytime in your Apple ID settings.

You may also have rights to data portability, to withdraw consent, and to complain to a competent data-protection authority, including the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner where applicable. We will respond to verified requests within the timeframe required by applicable law. Some information may be retained where required by law or in restricted backups until those backups are overwritten.

Children

Vinia is about wine and is intended for adults of legal drinking age. It is rated 17+ and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the legal drinking age in their jurisdiction. If you believe a minor has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

International data transfers

Our service providers may process and store data in countries other than your own, including the United States. Where required, we use recognized transfer mechanisms and contractual or other safeguards intended to provide an appropriate level of data protection.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes may be communicated in the app or on this page.
